Search for Missing Cyclist Continues

Michael Martin, 29, a UC Berkeley staff engineer and former professional cyclist, was possibly cycling in the hills of Berkeley or Oakland when he went missing Saturday afternoon.

From the press release sent out by friends of missing cyclist Michael ("Mike") Martin yesterday:

Close friends are calling for the public’s help in finding a 29-year-old Bay Area man who has been missing since Saturday afternoon.

Berkeley resident Anthony Michael Martin, a physicist and former professional cyclist who goes by the name of Mike, was possibly riding his bike in the hills of Berkeley or Oakland when he went missing, since his cell phone was found on Saturday by a cyclist on Tunnel Road in Berkeley.  He had plans that night to meet with his girlfriend at his apartment near the UC Berkeley campus but never returned.

Friends and neighbors are highly concerned for Mike because he had been researching juice diets and fasting, and may have been malnourished. Although he was an experienced cyclist, he may have been riding in steep terrain with diminished physical strength and impaired judgment.

Mike, whose family lives in Florida, is an active member of University Lutheran Chapel in Berkeley and has worked at the nanofabrication laboratory at UC Berkeley.  He is six feet tall, slender, and has brown hair and brown eyes.

At the time he went missing, he was most likely riding a fluorescent green and white road bike, a grey and blue helmet, white cycling shoes, regular street clothes and possibly a blue Mountain Hardware backpack.

Mike's friends are currently contacting local authorities to help them with their search.  Anyone who has seen Mike or knows about his whereabouts can call the Berkeley Police Department at 510-981-5900.

Reporters wishing to get more information on Mike can contact friends who are searching for him at 916-910-5588.
