School District Seeks New Superintendent

The process is underway to find a replacement for retiring Berkeley schools Superintendent Bill Huyett. What kind of superintendent does Berkeley Unified need? Share your thoughts.

The Berkeley School Board kicked off the process to find a new superintendent Wednesday with a request for proposals from consulting companies able to lead the search.

The consulting firm will help with recruitment, screening, interviewing and selection, in addition to working with the board on soliciting community feedback about the qualities Berkeley residents desire in a new superintendent.

The board aims to approve a consulting agreement by February. A tentative timeline based on the previous superintendent search in 2008 indicates that the board and consulting firm will request public input in March and begin identifying and recruiting candidates in the run up to an April application deadline.

A candidate will be selected in May, according to the timeline. The new superintendent will start in July 2012.

Superintendent William ("Bill") Huyett joined the district in February 2008 and  last month. Huyett said he appreciated ending his career after such an enriching, rewarding experience, and expressed his admiration for the devotion of the Berkeley community to its school district. "I've never seen anything like it in my career," said Huyett.
