Panel To Discuss Student-Majority Redistricting Proposal

The first in a series of discussions about the relationship between UC Berkeley and the City of Berkeley begins next Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Students make up a quarter of the population in Berkeley, and a recent push by campus leaders and a coalition of students aims to make that population a majority in its own city council district. A group of UC Berkeley students in August, which would redraw boundaries to concentrate students and thus give them more political strength. 

With a number of redistricting proposals on the table, and the possibility of more being submitted by the Sept. 30 deadline, officials from the City of Berkeley and UC Berkeley will participate in a panel discussion of the student-majority plan. 

The panel discussion takes place 7 p.m. next Wednesday night, Sept. 21, at  on Dana Street. Members of the community are invited to attend.

Panelists include Councilmember Kriss Worthington, Berkeley political science professor Bruce Cain, and Joey Freeman, vice-president for external affairs of the Associated Students of the University of California. Berkeleyside’s Lance Knobel will moderate the discussion.

The discussion series, titled "The University and the City: Ideas for Partnership", continues on Oct. 19 with a look at environmental sustainability in Berkeley, and Nov. 9, when panelists will discuss ways to improve Berkeley's arts, food and entertainment districts.
