MLK Day Events and Closures in Berkeley

Events this weekend include a memorial concert in Oakland featuring a Berkeley High star, a milk for kids drive at the Berkeley Bowl and a celebration in Piedmont. Monday is also a parking meter holiday in Berkeley.

The legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. thrives, and on Monday, Jan. 16, Americans are encouraged to have a "day on, not a day off" and provide service to their communities. Here's what you need to know about the national holiday, plus how you can get involved, and celebrate, in honor of Dr. King. 

Events

What: The memorial concert features Poplyfe, a band who came in fourth place in the last season of America's Got Talent and is headed by a Berkeley High School student. 
When: Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, 7 p.m.
Where: Paramount Theatre, 2025 Broadway, Oakland.
Cost: $8 for children under 12, $18 for adults.

What: The community breakfast honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be attended by faith, civic, and community leaders in Berkeley. This event is by invitation only. What: On MLK Day of Service, volunteers will hand out flyers that explain the Milk-for-Kids project and encourage shoppers at the partner stores to purchase milk coupons. Sign up to volunteer here.

What: Join the Alameda County Community Food Bank to make a difference for the one in six residents of Alameda County who rely on the Food Bank. Donate through the Virtual Food Drive or drop-off non-perishable goods for families in need.

What: The City of Piedmont will mark MLK Day with a shared meal, music and film about Dr. King at the Piedmont Community Center. A potluck lunch will be served; all guest are encouraged to bring a dish reflecting their heritage.

What: Volunteers will help staff remove invasive plants and restore the shoreline's habitat. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring your own refillable water bottle.
