Fire Damages Chez Panisse

Overnight fire damaged exterior, part of front dining room.

Bay City News — UPDATED 6 a.m.: The Friday morning fire at Chez Panisse caused major damage to the front dining room, but the rest of the building appears to be intact, according to news reports.

Firefighters told KPIX TV they estimated it would take $150,000 to $200,000 to repair the damage at the famed Chez Panisse Restaurant in Berkeley.

The fire at the restaurant, located at 1517 Shattuck Ave., was reported at 3:04 a.m., according to fire officials. Crews are still at the scene.

According to news reports, the flames engulfed the entire front of the restaurant and reached the second story. Firefighters said the restaurant's sprinkler system saved the building from being destroyed.

Foodies everywhere immediately took to Twitter to express their condolences to celebrity chef and co-owner Alice Waters for this blow to her world famous eatery, which celebrated its 40th anniversary two years ago:
