Cheap Thrills: Exploring Tilden's Botanic Garden

Explore the beauty of the Regional Parks Botanic Garden and watch as autumn settles over Tilden.

Tucked deep in the heart of Tilden, in a cool cleft of Wildcat Canyon, Tilden’s Botanic Garden is a secret sanctuary, a fairyland oasis spread over 10 acres and devoted entirely to the native plants of California.

Entering the gates, gravel crunches beneath your feet, and a weighty quiet wraps you in the changed rhythms of stillness. Birdsong breaks out over the silence, carrying its sunny melody and welcoming you into the garden. Soft, golden light splinters through the trees, warming the earth and pulling a sweet, peaty aroma across the breeze.

As you start off exploring the varied — and enchanting — terrain, you’ll find yourself traversing the narrow, twisting, sloping pathways which lattice the gardens.  Each path takes you someplace different and wonderful, winding through the displays in an intuitive and organic pattern that allows you to feel as though you’ve discovered things naturally, come upon them in their natural setting. Little bridges overhung with weeping branches straddle slow moving streams, the soft gurgling of water leading you onward and opening out into some new botanic delight.

The garden is stunning in autumn, the deep blush of the season just beginning to infuse the native flora. Come early and enjoy the park as it wakes up. Wind you way slowly through, taking time to visit the 10 different regional sections the garden is divided into. Wear a broad brimmed hat against the sunshine, bring a bottle of water, and wander through the wonders of Tilden’s own Botanic Garden.
