Berkeley PD Crime Log for July 29 - Aug. 4

The past week saw a number of robberies on Berkeley streets. BPD offers a community safety tip.

Below is a sampling of items from the Berkeley Police Department's crime blotter from July 22-28. The narratives have been written and selected by Jennifer Coats, the Berkeley Police Department's public information officer.  

July 29

Robbery, 1600 Block of Shattuck Avenue

On Sunday, July 29, 2012 at approximately 10:40 p.m., a robbery occurred in the 1600 Block of Shattuck Avenue. The female victim was walking in the area when she was grabbed from behind by the unknown suspect. The suspect attempted to take the victim’s purse and a struggle ensued. The suspect did not get the victim’s purse and fled the area. The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries during the incident.

The suspect is described as:

Suspect – “Black male adult, 5’10”-6’ tall and average build.”

Robbery, 2300 Block of College Avenue

On Sunday, July 29, 2012, at approximately 7:00 p.m., a robbery occurred in the 2300 block of College Avenue. The male victim made arrangements to sell an I-Pad to the suspect. The suspect grabbed the property and fled. The victim attempted to follow the suspect when he was physically assaulted by another suspect. The suspects fled on foot south on College Avenue and then east on Durant Avenue.

The suspects are described as:

Suspect 1 – “Black male, 18-25 years old, 5’10” tall, lanky build wearing a black T-shirt and baggy blue jeans.”

Suspect 2 – “Black male, 20-25 years old, 5’11” tall, athletic build, chin length dread locks wearing a white T-shirt and baggy blue jeans.”

July 30

Robbery, University Avenue/Grant Street

On Monday, July 30, 2012 at approximately 2:45 p.m., a robbery occurred near the intersection of University Avenue and Grant Street. The male victim was walking in the area when he was contacted by the unknown suspects. The suspects forcibly removed the victim’s property, which included a backpack and cell phone. The victim was not injured. The suspects then got into a black four door vehicle and fled south on Grant Street.

The suspects are described as:

Suspect 1 – “Black Male Adult, 25-28 years old, light skinned and thin.”

Suspect 2 – “Black Male Adult, 20’s, 6’5”-6’8” tall with a lanky build.”

Suspect 3 – “Black Male Adult, 20’s.”

Robbery, 2300 Block of Shattuck Avenue

On Monday, July 30, 2012, at approximately 7:50 p.m., a robbery occurred in the 2300 block of Shattuck Avenue. The male victim got into an argument with the suspect. The argument escalated into the victim being chased by two suspects who then physically attacked the victim. The suspects then robbed the victim by taking his money. The victim suffered a minor non-life threatening injury. The suspects fled the area. One of the suspects was located and apprehended by BPD.  

The suspects are described as:

Suspect 1 – “Black Male, 20-25 years old, 5’8” tall, medium build wearing a black short sleeved shirt and black jeans.”

Suspect 2 – “Black Male, 22 years old, 6’2” tall and a 170 lbs.”

July 31

Robbery, Claremont and Alcatraz Avenues

On Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at approximately 11:10 a.m., a robbery occurred near the intersection of Claremont Avenue and Alcatraz Avenue. The female victim was walking in the area when the unknown suspect ran up behind her and demanded her purse. Fearing for her safety the victim gave the suspect her purse. The suspect fled running west on Alcatraz Avenue.

The suspect is described as:

Suspect – “Black male adult, 20’s, 5’9”-5’11”, thin wearing a blue and white bandana on head and loose or baggy long pants.”

August 1

Robbery, 1900 block of University Avenue

On Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at approximately 10:16 a.m., a robbery occurred in the 1900 block of University Avenue. The female victim was walking in the area when the unknown suspect approached the victim. The suspect grabbed the victim’s purse; the force used by the suspect caused the victim to be knocked to the ground. The suspect fled the area on foot.

The suspect is described as:

Suspect – “White Male, 40-45 years old, 6’-6’2” tall, thin build, blonde hair and beard wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt.”

August 2

Robbery, Bancroft Way/Fulton Street

On Thursday, August 2, 2012, at approximately 9:03 p.m. a strong armed robbery occurred in the area of Bancroft Way and Fulton Street. The female victim was in the area when she was approached by the two suspects. One suspect took the victim’s purse and started going through it. The victim did what she could to prevent the robbery, but fearing for her safety gave the suspect her purse.  The suspects took the victim’s property and fled onto UCB property. BPD and UCPD officers were able to locate and apprehend the suspects. The suspects were arrested by BPD for robbery. The victim was not injured during the incident and her property was recovered.    

The suspects are described as:

Suspect 1 – “Black Male Adult, 18 Years Old, 5’10” Tall, 170 lbs, black hair and brown eyes.”

Suspect 2 – “Black Male Juvenile, 17 years old, 5’10” tall, 154 lbs, black hair and brown eyes.”    

Robbery, Stuart Street/Adeline Street

On Thursday, August 2, 2012, at approximately 10:16 a.m., a robbery occurred near the bus top at Adeline Street and Stuart Street. The female victim was waiting to catch the bus. The unknown suspect walked by the victim and forcibly took the victim’s cell phone and money that were in her hand. The suspect then fled on foot.

The suspect is described as:

Suspect – “Black Male, mid 30’s, 5’8” tall, dark complexion, short hair wearing a blue long sleeve shirt, jeans and tennis shoes.”

August 3

Attempted Robbery, Heinz Street/9th Street

On Friday, August 3, 2012, at approximately 9:00 a.m., an attempted robbery occurred in the area of 9th and Heinz Streets. The female victim was walking in the area when she was approached by an unknown suspect. The suspect ran up to the victim and attempted to forcefully take the victim’s cell phone. There was a struggle and the suspect let go and walked away. The suspect returned and demanded the victim’s purse. The victim was able to get assistance from another citizen. The suspect left joining two other suspects. The group was last seen running south from the area.

The suspects are described as:

Suspect 1 – “Black Male, 16-18 years old, 5’8” tall, thin build, wearing a blue/yellow baseball hat, dark blue jacket, white T-shirt and blue jeans.”

Suspect 2 – “Black Male, 16-18 years old, 5’8”, thin build wearing a red jacket, torn blue jeans.”

Suspect 3 – “Black Male, 16-18 years old, 5’8”, medium build wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and a dark baseball hat.”

August 4

Robbery, 2100 Block of San Pablo Avenue

On Saturday, August 4, 2012, at approximately 3:55 p.m., a robbery occurred at a business in the 2100 block of San Pablo Avenue. The unknown suspect attempted to take money from the register when opened. The employee attempted to stop the suspect who then struck the employee. A second employee attempted to intervene and was also struck by the suspect, which resulted in minor injuries to the victim. The suspect fled the store with cash from the register.

The suspect is described as:

Suspect – “Black Male, 20’s, 5’10”-6’ Tall, thin, dark complexion wearing a black baseball hat with a blue rim, black T-shirt, blue or black pants and white and black Nike tennis shoes.”

Robbery, 3000 Block of College Avenue

On Saturday, August 4, 2012, at approximately 9:30 a.m., a robbery occurred in the 3000 block of College Avenue. The female victim was walking in the area. The unknown suspect approached the victim and attempted to take her cell phone. The victim tried to hold onto her phone, but the suspect forcibly removed the phone from the victim.

The suspect is described as:

Suspect – “Male Adult wearing a dark blue sweatshirt and dark grey sweatpants.”

Robbery, Acton Street/66th Street

On Saturday, August 4, 2012, at approximately 1:40 a.m., a robbery occurred near the intersection of Acton and 66th Streets. The female victim was walking in the area when she was punched and knocked to the ground. The unknown suspect stole the victim’s purse. The suspect then fled west on 66th Street. The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries as a result of the incident and refused medical treatment at the scene.

The suspect is described as:

Suspect –  “Hispanic Male, late 20’s, 5’8” tall, medium build, shaved head wearing all dark clothing.”
