Berkeley High Wants to Reward Students for Attending School

Berkeley High School students could receive rewards — ranging from sandwiches to iPads — for good attendance, the Daily Californian reports.

High school officials have been pushing attendance this school year and last, and they hope a reward system would increase attendance rates even more. 

The plan calls for donations from community members and merchants, especially those in the downtown area where BHS students often congregate at lunch time.

The Downtown Berkeley Association has been working with BHS Dean of Attendance Daniel Roose on the plan since fall, the Daily Cal report says.

Increased attendance would benefit the Berkeley Unified School District as well as students, since state funding for public schools is based in part on average daily attendance.
